Book Review: The Keeper by Shana Dow

Happy Saturday. Today I want to share with you one of the many authors I've come to know via Instagram. Shana Dow is in the midst of an amazing young adult series staring Marston, one that both I and my tween have enjoyed. This week, I'm going to share the first in the series, The Keeper, and next week, The Meadow. Shana is currently working on book three of the series, so there's time to catch up!

About the Book

Marston Ames believes his life is over.

After his father accepts a job out of state, Marston is ripped away from the only life he ever knew. Settling in a small town in northwest Montana, loneliness and depression overwhelm him. He’s lost everything that made him who he is.

To make matters worse, he’s being plagued by heart-stopping nightmares. Each time, he is pursued by a shadowy figure intent on killing him. When his dreams leak into reality, Marston feels as if he is losing grip on his sanity.

A quest of discovery is before him and what he uncovers will change the course of his life forever.

My Review

This origin story tracks Marston as he discovers his inborn ability to wield the power of light and help keep balance in the mulitverse. From the very start, the power of darkness tries to get ahold of him, and while he's learning the ropes, he finds himself unique amongst new keepers, incredibly sensitive and already in contact with the dark Elites, a rare event from what he's been told.

The plot flowed well throughout, and the ending finished this novel nicely while leaving you excited for more to come. This first book of the series opens us up into a fantastic world where teens can spread the light and help change a world for the better, which is an amazing message for this day in age.

In particular, I love that Marston's trainer is an incredibly competent older girl whom he develops a crush on. I love this dynamic so much, a 'role reversal' of sorts from what we've been used to.

This book is marketed as YA, but is also very appropriate for an MG reader, and I recommend it for everyone that loves coming of age adventures.

About the Author

Shana grew up reading and writing short stories. Whenever it was her turn to read her creative writing in class, everyone knew she would read a story way beyond the required one to two-page maximum.

She met and married her husband and they have four boys. She put her dream of writing on hold while her sons were small but continued to study the art of writing and read as much as she was able.

Shana is a huge fan of sci-fi and fantasy. She also enjoys delving into the world of dystopian novels. She finds the themes represented in these genres universal and inspiring to the human condition. She always roots for the underdog and understands that some stories may not end ideally, although she prefers a happy ending.

Several years ago, she had a dream about a boy and his discovery which inspired the story for her debut novel. Years would go by, but she said that the dream remained vivid and she remembered every detail as if she had just dreamt it the night before. (She will not share the details of the dream here – spoilers!)

She always wanted to be a writer and when the time came, she dove in and didn’t look back. She has plans for one more book in the Keepers of the Balance series and has a plethora (one of her favorite words) of ideas for other books in the future.
